I've implemented the On the Page / In My Head activity in our copywork, and we completed our first character drawing/analysis. My 9 year old son and daughter are "at grade level", not struggling learners. I see this as truly helping them to learn the process of deeper comprehension and analysis of the passage and of characters. I think these practices are highly effective learning tools in the development of all readers. I even have my oldest (12 year old daughter) using the strategies. The author, Rita Cevasco, has over 30 years of experience in the field which is evident in her writing and explanations of why her ideas are effective tools for supporting growth in reading and writing. She emphasizes "less is more" and meeting the child where they are to promote growth and recognize the signs of progress. In my home I have three children spanning the elementary years to 8th grade. One is a prolific reader and writer, another an advanced reader, and one with a moderate to severe language disorder that makes reading comprehension a significant challenge. After one initial reading to grasp the basic principles I could see my shared reading take on a different tone that yielded some pleasant surprises and insights. With seven plus years of direct personal experience of supporting a child with a language disorder where reading and writing represent a significant challenge, I am genuinely excited about this book and think it will become a valuable guide and resource in our homeschool. Well done, Rita Cevasco! I think you have created something very special here. Some things to note this is not an "open and go book" but offers some insights that will help you apply the lessons and master them over time as you get more familiar with the ideas behind them. This book is built on the premise of partnering with your child as you, together, learn how to master and improve reading and writing skills. I love it for many reasons but particularly because is puts the power into the hands of the parents that I am confident will help bring about the necessary growth and confidence to inspire. Rita Cevasco is a rare gift in the world of reading and language instruction. She brings with her the experience of her clinical practice as well as her home education background with her own children. What shows up in this book is a variety of methods and tools any parent can use to deepen a child's connection to language through reading. The paucity of "reading comprehension" materials available to parents makes this book extra valuable. I love Rita's practice of helping kids to notice what's on the page and then to observe what's happening in their minds as they read. She gives suggested ways to keep track of those two experiences in order to help kids make connections that might not be immediately apparent.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is that it allows kids to learn how to create an internal dialogue around the content of a text. Rather than merely paying attention to plot or a list of "characteristics" like theme or imagery, Rita guides students to consider what they bring to their readings first. Then she guides them to consider what the author may have intended or what clues there are in a book to the intended meanings. Reading comprehension is not about multiple choice tests and identifying picky details. It's about internalizing the meanings and themes so that they enrich the reader. This book is a wonderful contribution to that journey and outcome.
The artwork supports the text beautifully. Tracy Molitor's illustrations allow the metaphor (trees in the forest) to be grasped more immediately and with more power. She also creates visual relief throughout the book for the reader and helps students to grow in their visual literacy as well.
I've worked with Rita over the last 10 years and admire her! Highly recommended.
Rita Cevasco’s experience and passion for assisting students explore the world of literature is apparent on every page of this book. The strategies presented in Trees in the Forest reflect what the research tells us about how people read. Each strategy is presented in an easy to understand format that includes the rationale, personal reflection from Rita, student examples, and insights from a parent who used the strategy. There is an opportunity for the reader to use the strategy alone before presenting it to the child. This is helpful so the teacher can anticipate potential barriers to success and be ready to make appropriate adjustments.
Trees in the Forest is written for parents who home-school or who want to assist their struggling child at home. However, as an experienced teacher, I recognize that this book can inform instruction for the classroom, especially in the elementary years, but also, with some adjustment, in the secondary ages.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to help children become lifelong readers.
